other ="additional or extra", or "alternative", or "different types of".

other as a determiner

other在使用限定詞時(shí)，可與不可數(shù)名詞和可數(shù)名詞復(fù)數(shù)連用：

Some music calms people; other music has the opposite effect. (different types of music)

What other books by Charles Dickens have you read, apart from‘Oliver Twist’? (additional or extra books)

當(dāng)other與可數(shù)名詞奇數(shù)連接時(shí)，需要在前面添加另一個(gè)限定詞：

Jeremy is at university; our other son is still at school.

注：other在使用限定詞時(shí)，沒有復(fù)數(shù)形式（others）

Mandy and Charlotte stayed behind.The other girls went home. (The others girls...)

other as a pronoun

other作為代詞耗時(shí)，根據(jù)前后文本的內(nèi)容，可以采用復(fù)數(shù)的形式。

the other與名詞單數(shù)組合時(shí)，是指兩個(gè)事物或人中的第二個(gè)，也指事物對立：

The gift shop is on the other side of the street.

the other與名詞復(fù)數(shù)組合時(shí)，是指一組人或事物中的其余部分：

Joel and Karen are here, but where are the other kids?

Where are the other two dinner plates? I can only find four.

the other as a pronoun

the other作為代詞時(shí)，用來指代前面提到的另一個(gè)或替換：

He had his hat in one hand and a bunch of flowers in the other.

She has two kittens, one is black and the other is all white.

當(dāng)用來指代多個(gè)人或事物時(shí)，the other還有復(fù)數(shù)形式the others：

Bob is on his way here, with the others.

another as a determiner

another只能與名詞單數(shù)組合，指另一個(gè)，另一個(gè)：

Would you like another cup of coffee?

You’ve met Linda, but I have another sister who you haven’t met, called Margaret.

another as a pronoun

another代詞也指前面提到的另一個(gè)或替換：

The applications are examined by one teacher, then passed on to another.
